ABOUT
Driving recklessly is a choice. Most people don't realize how dangerous it is until something tragic happens. "Almost 60 percent of drivers indicated that they were substantially in control of whether or not they would be involved in a crash" (M. Lance). If drivers admit to being able to control the outcome of the situation, why are so many choosing wrong?
Not only are experienced drivers offenders, but young people are recklessly driving as well. "In 2009, 11 percent of all drivers in the United States involved in fatal car accidents were between 15 and 20 years old" (Parkinson). Without knowing the true consequences of their actions, new drivers are quick to speed and swerve without thinking twice. "Among crashes attributed to a critical teen driver error, 21 percent of serious teen driver crashes were due to driving too fast for road conditions" (Curry).
Fatalities from reckless driving are very overwhelming, but the money put into the many fines is also immense. "Speeding-related crashes account for $40.4 billion in economic costs each year and claimed 11, 674 lives in 2008" (Bullard).
